What’s in a Name?

Smudge Pot Creative, LLC was conceived in 2012 when the company’s founder and her husband were on their honeymoon in Napa, California. As they strolled through a local antique shop, she pointed out what she thought was a short and squat Chiminea standing in the corner. “That’s a smudge pot”, her husband corrected her. She laughed at his response, fairly certain that he was pulling her leg. What was a smudge pot and how could this strange looking object have such a cutesy name? Her husband’s family grew up with orange orchards so he explained how it worked to keep frost off of the trees in the winter. Since her extended family had apple orchards she thought it was a fitting name for the independent design company that she wanted to build. One year later, Smudge Pot Creative, LLC was born.

The company’s gold hue was inspired by the color of a #2 pencil since every design is first concepted and sketched out by hand on paper before ever being brought to life on a computer screen.

Hello, my name is Laura and I am a DesigNerd. My passion for all things design earned me this nickname back in college and I have fully embraced it in the decade that I have been working in the industry. With a BFA and an MA in design under my belt, I hope to one day inspire this same passion in others by teaching at a local college or university. When I am not adventuring in the outdoors you will find me glued to a computer screen, living for layouts, and pursuing the growth of my business.
